13th Annual NH Penguin Plunge at Hampton Beach
This popular fundraising event is now in it’s thirteenth year and is more popular than ever! Jay and I watched them Plunge back in 2009 and we were very impressed that this group of nutty dedicated people actually jumped into the frigid Atlantic Ocean. It was pretty hysterical to watch as some of them were in skimpy bathing suits while others were dressed up in costumes. We took a bunch of pictures and I even attempted to take some video albeit the video is pretty bad since I could hardly shoot over the very excited crowd of onlookers. Visit

September 24—25, 38 th Annual Tri-State Seacoast Century,Hampton Beach, NHScenic rides along the seacoast of Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. The sea breeze, hopefully the sun, the fall weather, the friends, limited hills and the bike make this century one of the best rides in America once again! The route is marked. Cue sheets, maps, and rest stops with food and water will be available about every 25 miles. Routes of 25, 50, and 63 miles also available. The fun starts Friday, June 17th when 300 tons of imported sand is dropped on Hampton Beach and the "Grady Bunch" starts pounding up the demo site. Rejuvenated beach gets ready for season

May 27, 2011 2:00 AMHAMPTON — It's starting to warm up at Hampton Beach, and local officials believe this weekend's forecast bodes well for a banner Memorial Day weekend that will include the first fireworks show of the season on Sunday night.

"It's been a cold spring, and it's been raining for the last two weeks, so I think everyone is gearing up for a big weekend," said BJ "Doc" Noel, president of the Hampton Area Chamber of Commerce.

Although this weekend's weather forecast is not perfect, predictions call for an improvement over the weather the past couple of weeks, Noel said.

Memorial Day ranks as the fourth busiest travel day in New Hampshire, and the long weekend is the unofficial kickoff to the summer tourist season at Hampton Beach. What happens during those three days, local businesses say, sets the tone for the rest of the summer.

Several Hampton Beach businesses will be enticing tourists to come in their doors throughout the weekend by offering specials and other events. One such business is the Ashworth by the Sea Hotel which is celebrating a birthday.

"The Ashworth opened 99 years ago this weekend, and we are celebrating with a Friday night special," said Kathy Maxwell, group sales manager for the hotel. "It is our 99th birthday celebration rate at $99 per night plus tax."

Noel said the beach in the last few weeks has started to draw more people — even with the dismal weather — due to what he called the "curiosity factor.

"People are very curious about all the improvements that have been made as part of $14.5 million redevelopment project," he said.

Improvements include two new bathhouses — one across from Haverhill Street and the other at the Marine Memorial — and new Seashell Complex.

While the new stage and main complex will not be open this summer, the two outlying buildings of the complex, including the Visitors Center, will be ready by mid-June.

Noel believes the public's excitement about the project will continue throughout the summer.

Business owners hope to have a big sales weekend, as business slumped this spring for many.

"The weather is not helping," said T-Shirt City employee Paulette Noboa.

According to Noboa, T-Shirt City sales are very dependent on the weather.

"Bad weather," Noboa said, "no customers."

The small shop opened for the season on May 2. Noboa remains hopeful for a good showing this summer.

"We have to be patient," she said. "We have to wait. People will come around."

The rain's effect is also being felt at the Playland Arcade, which has seen fewer skee-ballers and video-gamers this spring, according to manager Dan Brennan.

Memorial Day weekend is typically when the arcade switches over to summer hours, he said. This past weekend, on Saturday, Brennan noticed there was a "definite change" in business when the weather was warm and sunny. Business should also pick up now that more parking is available by the arcade, he said.

Alex Rage, manager of Rexall Drugs, said while spring may have been dreary, he believes beach-goers are in for a good weekend and a good summer.

With travel getting expensive, Rage is hopeful Hampton Beach will be an alternative destination.

"Gas prices being high can actually help us, people are more likely to stay local," Rage said.

He also expects the new redevelopment project to be a boon to businesses in the area. "The state has really pulled through for us," he said.

Still, he knows the weather is the most important thing for businesses on the beach. "It's all about the weather. Memorial weekend is very hit or miss."

The beach will have several new businesses this summer, along with the return of Mrs. Mitchell's Gift Shop, Noel said.

The shop, owned by the Mitchell family, is the first of three businesses to rebuild after the devastating A Block fire in February 2010.

One new business creating excitement is Oceanfront Gaming, which is housed on the second floor at 81 Ocean Boulevard.

The business owners are planning a beach bash and ribbon-cutting ceremony with WXGR radio on Sunday.

"To say we are excited would be an understatement," said Peter Anzalone, executive director/member of Oceanfront Gaming.

The business features poker tables and other games of chance, including roulette, blackjack, and craps.

For this weekend, Noel said the chamber's Visitors Center will be temporary housed across the street at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom, next to the Dunkin' Donuts.

While the Hampton Beach Village Precinct will not host live entrainment on Memorial Day, it will host the fireworks display on Sunday. Officials said the summer's live nightly entertainment will start June 18.

While the new Seashell Stage will not be ready this summer, a temporary stage will be set up on the beach across from B Street.

Congratulations to Bob Preston on being named Citizen of the Year by the Hampton Rotary Club.

The publicity-shy Preston was the organization's unanimous choice and the honor is well deserved.
Friends who spoke at the award banquet said Preston exemplifies the Rotary motto "Service Above Self." Providing space for a soup kitchen, raising money to save the town's Mounted Patrol Unit, serving on the board of directors and raising funds for an organization that helps the families of police officers and firefighters lost in the line of duty, are just a few of Preston's contributions.

Preston received warm praise from his children for serving as a role model and he in turn praised his own father, former state Sen. Robert Preston. Bob said his father always told him "When you're part of a community you can either live off it or you can participate in it."
We're all grateful for the way Preston participates in our communities.
